What is an unmet medical need?Today, there are still more diseases than there are treatments. Of the approximately 30,000 known diseases, effective treatments are available for only about one third. In some cases, treatment options exist but are unsatisfactory due to poor efficacy or unpleasant side effects.
Greater understanding of different diseases and their causes is helping to produce therapies that can more effectively address medical needs. New insights into the biology of disease and more precise understanding of why some people react differently lie at the heart of biotechnology.
Biotechnology holds the promise of more targeted treatments for individual groups of patients as well as finding treatments for diseases that have so far eluded scientists. It also provides new opportunities to meet challenging but common diseases like cancer and heart disease.
